Laura Burcin

I am a fiber artist, which means I create things using fiber, yarn and cloth. I began weaving, spinning and dyeing yarn many years ago as a hobby.  My work is made from natural fibers like wool, cotton, and linen.  My handspun yarns and scarves are dyed with natural dyes such as indigo, weld and madder.  I’ve recently begun making leather purses from eco printed leather.

I am currently focusing on creating artistic works with tapestry. Tapestry is a form of textile art woven by hand on a loom. In tapestry weaving the artist interlaces each colored weft yarn back and forth in its own small pattern area.  Historically, tapestries were draped on the walls of castles for insulation during winter, as well as for decorative display.  I use natural warp and weft yarns for all my tapestries.  Some of my tapestries are made with entirely handspun naturally dyed yarn.

My tapestry “Enduring Change” was accepted in the Handweavers Guild of America “Small Expressions 2021 Exhibit”.  It will tour the United States along with 35 other fiber art pieces.
